Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work was established within the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation sciences (USWR) in 1993. The department is located in USWR in the northern part of Tehran.

The department is active in teaching theoretical and clinical subjects and also intensely research-active. Therefore, the academics and students are engaged in a variety of research activities.

While many students graduated, numerous students are currently studying in our department.  In this world class department, all staff is committed to exemplary professional behavior, collaboration and support.

The department welcomes national and also international students at undergraduate and also postgraduate levels.

What is Social Work?

Social issues can change during the time and facing these problems seems to be more complicated every day. Management of social problems is very depended on a lot of factors but the key factor in successful management of these issues is to have qualified specialists in this area.

Social work specialists ensure a quality management of these issues. Social workers improve the quality of life of individuals within the society. Social work education has a 50 years history in Iran.


The aims are as follows:

·   Upbringing qualified social workers who are ready to serve our society the best available social service in order to improve the quality of life of individuals, families, groups and communities they serve.

·   Training social workers, who can use their knowledge and professionalism to prevent social difficulties, improve living standards and expands social justice.

·   Upgrade professionalism and keeping an up to date management plan.

·   Enhance human health, well-being, and productivity through the promotion of human rights, social and economic justice, to achieve healthy and productive people with equitable resources in diverse settings. The department aims to advance and strengthen interdisciplinary and collaborative knowledge through teaching, research, service, and evidence-based practice, to prepare undergraduate and postgraduate students, with the use of evidence-based practice, for culturally competent professional and ethical generalist and social work practice and leadership.



Based on a fully integrated curriculum that combines self-directed learning opportunities with high quality lectures and tutorials, we teach undergraduate and postgraduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) students. The department ensures your professionalism and confident practice by delivering social work training from the beginning of your course till the last day of your study. The students have access to the comprehensive advanced study and clinical training and teaching, library and recreation facilities of the only rehabilitation university in the region.


Research is the foundation for teaching and clinical practice in social work department. Below is the name of a few of our high priority researches:

Social Policy and Social Problems, Social Planning, Social Health, Family and Child Welfare, Poverty and inequality, Violence, Antisocial Behaviors and Crimes, Substance Abuse and Social work intervention in disasters.

Social Work is a four year full time course with an integrated course frame; our focus would be a broad overview of the social work profession through its work with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organisations.
