What is Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy as a discipline of Rehabilitation Sciences is concerned with study, assessment, diagnosis and management of speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults. It is considered as a combination of science and art. The nature of speech therapy demands interrelationship with many disciplines including medicine, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and social sciences.

In order to be trained as a speech therapist, basic knowledge of neuroanatomical, physiology of speech mechanisms, phonology, linguistics, psycholinguistics, psychology and psychiatry is necessary. In addition, learning the techniques of diagnosis, assessment and therapy of speech and language disorders is one of the main objectives of the field.

A speech and language pathologist (speech therapist) should be familiar with the normal development of language, as well as diagnosis of different types of abnormal development of language for assessment and therapeutic objectives.

When the form of speech is more noticeable than its content, or the content is somehow distorted, then probably, some kind of speech and/or language disorder does exist. There are different speech and language disorders which might be observed among both children and adults, such as stuttering and articulatory problems. Communication deficits are also common in children with hearing impairment, learning disabilities, mental retardation, autism, people with cerebrovascular accidents and laryngectomized speakers. Any form of sensory or motor disorders may lead to some type of speech and language problems and may have an impact on the patients communicative capacities. As a result, it may lead to aggression, isolation, and may have an impact on the individual’s mental health, family relationship, education and prospective social life.

Our aim is to educate skillful graduates to prevent and manage the developmental and acquired communicative disorders through proper diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
